A tour of the place and its museums will draw us into the history of a city closely tied to the sea. The port of Cartagena, in the Mediterranean's Costa Cálida, has been prized since Carthaginian times. Thanks to its strategic position on the Murcia coast, it has been inhabited by several cultures which have left their mark on its artistic heritage. This maritime enclave was already known to the Carthaginians and Romans, and its name today comes from the Latin, Cartago Nova. Cartagena was under Arab domination until Ferdinand III 'the Saint' reconquered it and incorporated it into the kingdom of Castile. Its port played a key role in the War of Succession and the Peninsular War.

Roman Theatre Museum

The museum exhibits items discovered in excavations in the area of the Roman Theatre in Cartagena, built between the 5th and 1st centuries BC. The museum is part of an integral project carried out by architect Rafael Moneo that comprises the restoration of part of the city of Cartagena and its Roman Theatre, which had remained hidden for several centuries.

National Museum of Underwater Archaeology

Particular highlights include a collection of elephants' tusks with Phoenician inscriptions, unique in the world. Amphorae, lead ingots, anchors... even a life-size model of a Roman merchant ship. This is just a part of the collection on display in this museum dedicated to the exhibition of objects found in underwater archaeological excavations.

“Enrique Escudero de Castro” Municipal Archaeology Museum

The museum takes you from prehistory through to the 19th century. Located on the site of the late Roman San Antón necropolis, the visit follows a strict chronological order from the Paleolithic and the Bronze Ages to the Roman period, and then on to architectural items and lower arts from the 19th century. The San Antón necropolis itself is one of the main points of interest, and is perfectly integrated into its architectural surroundings.

Cartagena International Film Festival

Since 1972, Cartagena, in the Region of Murcia, has held its own festival dedicated to film. The festival was initially centred on productions with the sea as the main protagonist, but since 2005 has featured all types of productions, although with particular attention to new film-makers and national talent. It is divided into several sections including feature films, short films, animated stories and productions from the Region of Murcia.

Carthaginians And Romans Fiesta

Fiestas that recreate the conquest of Cartagena by the Roman Escipion. A landing commemorates the capture of the city in 209 BC by the Roman troops of Escipion, marking a festive week in which alternate days are devoted to one or the other band. The wedding of Hannial and Himilce orthe day of the Roman Circus, with its gladiators and wild animals, lead into the great parade on Saturday, the big day of the fiesta, when all the troops and legions march through the city.
