“The city of the Guggenheim” is an alternative name for this Basque Country destination as, since this original museum was built in 1997, Bilbao has been transformed forever. In fact, now it stands out for its ground-breaking structures created by prestigious architects, and which make it an international reference for modern design. Although, curiously, its unique character comes from combining avant-garde with the traditional feel of its old town, full of charming streets and bars offering pintxos, proof that they are passionate about gastronomy around here. All this has earned Bilbao a place of honour on the lists of Spain’s most interesting cities.

Mercado de La Ribera Market

This unique produce market is in the heart of the Old Town, alongside Bilbao Estuary. It has an eclectic, monumental style, although its character is markedly functional. Inside there are no columns. It is a completely open space and its illumination takes on special importance. The sunlight enters from above and filters through the floors, which are built in a translucent material, providing natural light throughout the building. Outside, the Mercado de la Ribera (riverbank market) has a variety of art deco ornamentation, combining windows, lattice windows, floral decorations and other decorative elements. It is outstanding not only for its beautiful windows, but also for the excellent variety of fish and seafood on sale.

Arriaga Theatre

The Arriaga theatre is one of the most important buildings in the city of Bilbao. It was modelled on the Paris Opera House and opened in 1890. It is the work of architects Joaquín Rucoba and Octavio de Toledo. The building is named after the Bilbao-born composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, whose bust presides over the imperial staircase. Its façade is in an eclectic style, with large balconies.

Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao

Since its opening in 1997, the Guggenheim Bilbao and Puppy - a floral sculpture of a dog by Jeff Koons, located outside the museum - have become the most internationally-known symbols of Bilbao. They form part of the collection of works by great figures in the world of art: David Salle, Chillida, Jeff Koons, Louis Bourgeois and Robert Rauschenberg are just a few examples. The Guggenheim also offers a series of activities for visitors who wish to broaden their knowledge of art.

Plaza Nueva Square

Now transformed into an urban landmark in the historic centre of Bilbao, Plaza Nueva square is one of the main hubs of the city's social life. The colonnade in this neo-classical monumental site is home to alternating shops, bars, restaurants and cafés where it's almost impossible not to stop and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the square.

Bilbao Art District

The streets of Bilbao are one big exhibition of architecture and contemporary art. Most of it can be found near the estuary, between the Guggenheim Museum, the Albia gardens and the The Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall. An initiative known as the Bilbao Art District organises activities throughout the year to integrate culture and art into the city’s daily life.
