Six villages in Asturias - Bimenes, Cabranes, Colunga, Nava, Sariegu and Villaviciosa - are known as the “Cider District”. As well as tasting the delicious cider traditionally produced in the area, if you visit around late April and early May you can see Apple Blossom Week and stroll around the orchards, take selfies in a sea of white flowers, learn the special cider pouring technique, and enjoy special menus for the occasion. If there’s such a thing as the perfect combination of culture, nature and gastronomy, then you’ll find it in Asturias. The first thing to catch your attention when you travel to this region in what is known as Green Spain is its spectacular scenery. This can be seen in places such as the Picos de Europa National Park, and at one of its most legendary sites: the Covadonga Lakes.

Tito Bustillo Cave

Almost all of the Tito Bustillo site is painted. Of all the pictures of animals, (horses, reindeer, etc.) there is one of a cetacean that is particularly interesting, as this species is very infrequent in prehistoric art.

Covadonga Sanctuary

Covadonga is the place where the Re-conquest began under king Pelayo, whose remains are buried in the cave alongside La Santina. This is the gateway to the Picos de Europa National Park.

Oviedo Cathedral

A symbol of Spanish Gothic architecture. Oviedo cathedral is mainly in the Gothic style, although there are also some clearly Baroque and Renaissance elements.

Postcard Destinations in Asturias

The landscapes in Asturias are like no other. Travelling to the north and entering the area of Green Spain means coming face to face with impressive mountains, lakes that seem like something out of a legend, cliffs, cave paintings, fishing villages next to the Cantabrian Sea.

Pre-Romanesque Sites in Asturias

There are examples of Asturian Pre-Romanesque art all over the Principality of Asturias. This architectural style, also called Asturian architecture, first appears in the 8th century at the beginning of the Kingdom of Asturias, and is one of the region’s most distinguishing artistic features.

People say Asturias, in northern Spain and on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea, is a green paradise. Take a moment to imagine it.
